In a quiet neighborhood in Mechanicsburg, PA, a family had been dealing with a backyard nightmare for years. What should have been a relaxing outdoor space had become completely unusable. Every time it rained, the yard would flood—leaving behind standing water, soggy ground, and a muddy mess that made the space impossible to enjoy.
Multiple attempts to fix the problem had already failed. They had worked with other professionals to grade and seed the lawn, but the flooding always came back. The family was tired of throwing time and money at temporary fixes. They were done wasting the potential of their backyard.
That’s when they reached out to us at JPB Landscaping.
Solving the real problem: poor drainage
After our first walkthrough, it was clear the root issue was poor drainage. No matter how beautiful a patio or lawn may look, if water isn’t being properly managed, the space won’t last—or be usable.
We designed and installed a French drain system to redirect stormwater away from the home and yard. This crucial step finally gave the property the drainage solution it had always needed, and it became the solid foundation for the full transformation that followed.
Designing for function, family, and flow
Once the drainage was taken care of, it was time to bring the backyard to life. The family wanted a space where they could relax, host friends, and still leave plenty of open grass for play.
Our final design included:
- A spacious paver patio for lounging, dining, and entertaining
- A custom retaining wall that gave structure and added visual interest
- A built-in fire pit to create a cozy gathering spot for evenings outdoors
- A balanced layout that left room for green space and play
The combination of hardscaping and lawn gave the backyard a sense of purpose—something it had never had before.
From waste of space to year-round retreat
Now, instead of avoiding the backyard, the family is out there enjoying it every chance they get. Rain no longer ruins their plans, and what was once a flood-prone yard is now a fully functional outdoor living space designed for years of enjoyment.
